A White Woman Asked Me, “Why Did You Mention His Race?”

A while back I told my story about a black man who singled me out as the only black woman on a train car, and I yelled at him and embarrassed him as a result. Many people from all racial backgrounds understood my anger and quick reaction at the time, however one white woman couldn’t fathom one small yet important detail in my article.

Why did you mention his race? she commented.

While this may appear to be an innocent inquiry, I knew better than to indulge her.

Here’s why.

As a black woman who interacts with nonblack people on a regular basis through my writings on my personal experiences, I understand there may be some confusion that I have no problem clearing up. Many nonblack women (and men, can’t forget about you guys!) seek to educate themselves through my honest analysis of black culture, and I am more than appreciative of your initiative to be allies for black women by actually supporting our work and more importantly, believing us!

However, what many women who disguise themselves as curious supporters (who are only looking to argue with me) don’t know is that I am spiritually gifted, and I am cautious about getting myself entangled in the mental and emotional traps they weave, as they will do anything to defend my first oppressor and…
