According To Black Culture, Two Dark Skinned People Cannot Date!

I will never, ever hold colorism solely as the responsibility of white people. Especially when black folks uphold it and refuse to move past what they consider to be a product of slavery.

Is it just me, but didn’t slavery occur hundreds of years ago? Why are we still bringing this historical institution up as a blanket excuse for why we are the way we are?

My friend told me the story of when she and her boyfriend were out grocery shopping. All of a sudden a black woman walked up to the couple and asked if they were dating. She responded with a yes. The woman then proceeded to tell the two that one of them should be lighter in complexion to “balance things out.” According to her, “Two dark skinned people shouldn’t be together.”

The couple looked at each other as if the woman had ten heads.

This is the type of audacious thinking that some black people possess since our culture has an unspoken rule that skin color trumps love. We see this dynamic play out in our media where lighter skinned women are almost always paired with darker complexioned men.

But let’s keep dodging responsibility like the plague and make our ills the fault of everyone else’s!
