Actually, Adults Don’t Have To Like Kids
“But you were a kid once!”
And?!
I watched a reel on Instagram that had me staring with my mouth wide open in disbelief for a few minutes. In the clip a baby was walking down the tiny aisle on a moving airplane and proceeded to extend his hand towards the passengers seated in the aisle seats. While I saw many smiling faces that welcomed the gesture, I noticed that a few adults flat-out refused to reciprocate the baby’s affection.
While I chose to protect my brain and sanity by intentionally ignoring the comments, I already knew that many parents and would-be parents were disgusted that an innocent child’s kindness wasn’t appreciated. And the question I must ask is this:
Why should it be?
I am going to temporarily bow at the feet of parents and unnecessarily exclaim that even though I am childfree I do like children. So my stance is not rooted in hate towards the little ones, but let’s be real: even if I was aggressively childfree you know there would still be some merit to my claims. But I also understand and respect that everyone doesn’t share the same feelings as I do for kids. And they shouldn’t.
Just like there is nothing on earth that is universally liked, such as sushi, animals, beaches, or anything that brings about a feeling of nostalgia…
