All Hail The Nuclear Family? Here’s Why I Would Prefer To Be A Single Mother

“As a human collective we view single motherhood as a curse to be avoided at all cost. However, having a terrible man around just for the sake of raising kids is a hefty price to pay, don’t you think?”

I don’t know about you, but I like to ask myself tough questions. Imagining situations that will probably never happen is considered to be a fun activity for me. I do this because it helps me challenge any long-standing beliefs that should be evaluated as I am an adult and I no longer need to automatically adapt my parent’s or culture’s values as my own, like I was forced to do as a child.

When it comes to the topic of children, as a childfree woman I like to ask myself the following questions:

If I really wanted a child, would I actually want to get married first? Or would I prefer to raise a baby on my own?

Now most people may find it odd that I would even consider single motherhood, as the nuclear family is still the socially acceptable blueprint by which we should attain to raise children. It is taboo to be a single mother, much less intentionally choose to raise a child alone without a man around.
