Are Black Women Lying About Why They Don’t Wear Their Own Hair To Work?

“They can wear their afros. They just don’t want to.”

For some reason the famous quote, “You can’t expect anyone to love you before you love yourself” seems to have fallen on deaf ears belonging to black women. I am not here to reiterate the ridiculous excuses black women give for not rocking their real hair, but I want to point out that everything really boils down to self and how we feel about self, as well as the lies we provide others about why we lie to self.

I truly believe that many black women choose to hide behind completely make-believe standards of professionalism in the work place when it comes to their hair. Because it is easier to claim that they are not allowed to wear their real hair to the office instead of admitting that no such rule exists.

They can wear their afros. They just don’t want to.
