You want to know one of the most loving things my mother has ever done for me?

I was around 12 years old when we sat next to each other on the side of her bed one Saturday night. And she told me that if she didn’t have my brother and I she would have used the money she is spending on parenting to get her PhD.

“Sanni, do you know how expensive children are?” she scoffed. “I love school. I love to learn. I would’ve stayed in school my entire life and just collect degrees. But I decided to be a mother.”

Truthfully, I was not offended in the slightest. She didn’t mean any harm; she wasn’t even venting her frustrations about motherhood to her own child. She was just telling the truth, and even as a child I was able to take in her words without feeling bad that my life sabotaged her dreams.

Although I wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for her sacrifice, as a little girl who didn’t want any kids of her own I still remember thinking that if I was in her shoes I…
