“I dislike anyone telling me how to spend my 24 hours. Especially if I must spend even 60 seconds of my day being spoken to like a child for a paycheck.”

“You know, you can smile at me.”

A woman who tried to lie her way into getting a table at my restaurant said this to me while I stood behind the front desk along with my manager. He did his best to appease her fake excuse for why she couldn’t make a reservation at one of the busiest, most exclusive restaurants in DC while I stood there, staring at her in disgust. There’s something about anyone trying to play me that really bothers my spirit, and I especially don’t like when someone tries to make me feel stupid for their mistakes. It was a good thing I was my boss’s favorite, because my irritation at her entitlement was apparent. And I was not about to give in to her demands for me to appear pleasant just to keep my job.

Throughout my years as an employee at various companies and establishments I have found myself on the receiving end of much belittlement, sexual advances, and blatant disrespect from staff and clients alike. Looking back, I put up with a lot of people’s shit just to pay some bills that belonged to a home I didn’t care to live in. I wanted to be laying half-naked on a beach somewhere around the world and working on my laptop, not coming home…
