I was always a people pleaser because I was never welcomed to share my thoughts in an environment that felt safe and loving. My parents and my peers hated that I kept to myself, but at the same time they contributed to my deafening silence. I have been punished, not only through mental and emotional abuse, but also physical abuse: if I said the “wrong” thing I could expect a slap, a spanking, or even a fight with someone much larger than me.
It wasn’t until I was an adult when I realized I didn’t need to be welcomed to share a damn thing, nor did I need to anticipate anyone’s reactions.
