Childfree Women, Please Quit Doing This

“Ladies, what is the alternative? Have a baby you cannot afford to shut them up? Endure postpartum depression, excessive bleeding, infections, hair loss, and a host of other serious health issues while caring for a screaming child?”

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Serenity Prayer

It annoys me to no end how childfree women spend so much of their precious time trying to convince strangers and loved ones alike that they are not selfish for choosing not to birth children.

You cannot control anyone and their opinions of you, no matter how hard you try. Like the legendary Serenity Prayer states, accept the things you cannot change and move on. Words can only hurt you if you allow them to.

Random folks on the internet think you’re selfish because you don’t want to risk your life to have a baby you don’t want? Family members and friends can’t stand you because you are freely exercising your autonomy, a practice many of the ladies in your circle weren’t aware of until it was too late?

Oh. Fucking. Well.

The next time someone dares to speak about your childfree status, ask yourself this question:

Who the fuck are you, and why should I care?

The free time you’ve gained from your decision should be spent doing enjoyable and pleasurable activities that enhance your life and contribute to your well-being and growth as a woman, not engaging with all sorts of unhinged individuals on the internet who won’t contribute a dime to the child they want you to have. You’re going to run your pretty self ragged worrying about a label that literally means nothing.

I will say this until I take my last breath: most people and their opinions do not matter.

Ladies, what is the alternative? Have a baby you cannot afford to shut them up? Endure postpartum depression, excessive bleeding, infections, hair loss, and a host of other serious health issues while caring for a screaming child?
