This evening my mother, a devout Christian, asked me what I was thankful for. I said nothing. Because I don’t really understand the purpose of being thankful; I believe this practice of gratefulness is rooted in fear of the inevitable. People who practice gratitude claim they always list what they are thankful for so that those things aren’t taken away, when in fact they can be taken away from us at a moment’s notice without our permission or input.

Why? Because life deems it so.

For example many of us, including myself, lost family and friends during the pandemic. Was this loss due to the fact that we didn’t thank some invisible man in the sky for them each and every minute? No.

Anyway, my mother told me that she was thankful for life. But the reason she gave was so ridiculous that I had to squint my eyes at her for a few minutes.

“I’m thankful for life because as humans we can’t create life. God gives life and wakes us up every morning because he is faithful.”

Excuse me?!
