“The beauty of life is that we get to decide if we want to do away with the characters we were playing in the past and course correct. Nothing is permanent, especially one’s personality and emotions. And we can use these facets to our benefit.”

I was nine years old when my brother and I accompanied our grandmother to Trinidad, where our family is from. It was a beautiful experience. We ate lots of delicious food, met family members we’ve never seen before, and got to experience another way of life for an entire summer.

My 10th birthday was spent on the island, and my dad’s side of the family threw me a wonderful birthday party that I will never forget. What really made it unforgettable was how my younger brother stole the show and quickly became the crowd favorite. Because he was always bold enough to do so.

Lil Bow Wow was playing in the background when my brother decided to start dancing out of nowhere. A circle formed around him and all the kids started chanting. “Go Chris! Go Chris!” they shouted excitedly.

We are both adults now. We were hanging out and I reminded him about the party in Trinidad. He started laughing to the point where tears formed in his eyes. “I love my personality!” he exclaimed.
