Faith In God? Nah. I Only Have Faith In Myself!

“How many believers would lean on their god during hard times if their god would simply quit making their lives so damn hard?”

My father’s birthday was this week. We decided to go to Miami with his sister and her husband to celebrate my dad’s new year of life along with their uncle, who turned 99 on the same day as my dad.

Yes, you read that correctly. He is 99 and still alive and kicking!

We originally planned to spend the night in Miami but decided to take the long drive home after dinner. Energetically, all of us were not feeling to stay in the city overnight.

While the drive to Miami wasn’t so bad, however the drive back irritated my spirit. My aunt and father were busy singing and playing songs of worship. And the underlying theme of each dreadful song I was forced to listen to had to do with faith.

First and foremost, I was the only non-Christian in the car. My parents raised my brother and I to possess the same belief in God that they had, but we both grew up to eventually reject Christianity and all organized religions in general. A few years ago I was introduced to ATR (African Traditional Religion) and I learned about the deities my ancestors worshipped and the different daily practices and ceremonies they participated in.
