Last night I received a simple hello text from an unknown number with an area code I didn’t recognize. I hesitated to respond, because I normally just block phone calls and text messages from unknown people almost as soon as I receive them. I look at it this way: if you are not leaving me a voicemail or a proper message stating your name and why you’re contacting me then we have nothing to discuss. But something told me to Google the area code. The text came from someone who resided in Los Angeles.

“I don’t know anyone who is living in LA currently,” I told myself. But I decided to bite anyway.

Who is this? I messaged back to the stranger.

Janice. You didn’t save my number? was the response I received.

At that point I knew this text wasn’t meant for me. I knew a Janice from my upbringing in the DMV (slang for the DC, Maryland, and Virginia metropolitan area), but I also knew this Janice didn’t have my damn phone number. So I blocked this mystery Janice who expected me to waste my time indulging her and resumed my evening.
