In my newsletter Evil Single Woman, I shared that my mother was forced to go to the emergency room on Christmas Day. While my extended family celebrated the holidays with us, only dad and I accompanied her.
As I stepped into the living room outfitted in snakeprint jeans, a turtleneck, and high heeled square-toe boots I was met with many surprised stares and compliments from my family, both uncles and aunts alike.
One of my favorite aunts approached me with a cheery smile on her face. She leaned over and whispered in my ear. “My dear, you are going to the hospital to support your mother. Not to meet a doctor!”
I laughed. “I dress like this every day.”
I can decipher energy very well, and I knew she didn’t mean any harm with her comment. The way I live my life as a single, childfree woman who takes immense pride in her appearance and never skips the gym fascinates her, since she belongs to an older generation where women believed it was an honor to forgo their beauty and self-care rituals to care for men and children.
