It is very rare for anyone, especially women, to dedicate precious time to deciding who and what they they are by themselves and for themselves without worrying about feedback on this decision from other people. This requires a sense of self and emotional sovereignty that just isn’t encouraged in our society. I mention that this cultivation is rare for women because we have been given a purpose since girlhood to be reared to serve every damn body, so creating our own purpose and identity may come with a lot more challenges than our gender counterpart.

As a result, many ladies find themselves reaching for anything, including the lowest of lows, to validate how pretty they are, how powerful they are, and how feminine they are. When you insist on digging in the trash heap to try and salvage whatever worth you haven’t given yourself first, you can resort to using the tragedies of rape, harassment, stalking, domestic violence, and other forms of abuse to essentially brag to others about your value that was given to you by someone else, or in this case, the man who is preying on you.

I am always left bewildered whenever I hear any woman justify the mistreatment she has…
