I Need Him Like I Need Lights?!

Last night I went to bed pretty early. Because I was extremely drowsy from doing a little too much exercise and exhausting my muscles earlier, I decided that I was too tired to eat dinner. So I took a shower, brushed my teeth, performed my nightly skincare routine, and then collapsed in my bed. My usual bedtime ritual has me finding an adult cartoon series like Family Guy or American Dad to stream while I sleep, but I decided to relax my mind by listening to my extensive, curated afro beat music playlist.

While I was drifting off to sleep my ex was on my mind. Years ago I introduced him to the genre through popular Nigerian artists such as WizKid, Patoranking, Burna Boy, Kiss Daniel, and Davido. And his love for their music quickly matched my own.

There were many evenings after dinner when we would laugh and perform silly dances together in his living room to afro beat. Music, lit candles, and intentionally making a fool out of ourselves as our feet jumped and tapped on those hardwood floors was our sacred gateway to nonsexual intimacy that served as a foundation for us to be better friends, even within a romantic relationship.

While it made me smile to reminisce about him and our fond memories together, I was not at all prepared to dream about him! But there is power in music, as we connect certain people and our memories with them to…
