This is so boring.

When are we moving on to the next pose?

I am getting sleepy.

Is this almost over?

These were the thoughts that crossed my mind as I begrudgingly tried my best to make yoga a part of my lifestyle. As a dancer I knew I needed to become more flexible, so I flirted with the practice from time to time. But I couldn’t find consistency with it, no matter how hard I tried.

What changed?

Like a mother who adds in pureed vegetables into her fussy toddler’s favorite cooked meals, I slipped yoga into my daily life in such an innocent way, it barely occurred to me that I was finally disciplined and motivated enough to do it daily without complaining.

If you would like to develop a yoga practice that you will stick to, here are the four tips I used to get started.

I created my own yoga routine that is tailored to my individual interests and goals.

I treat yoga as the perfect supplement to my exercise regimen, which mainly includes weight lifting and dancing. And I tailor the practice to accommodate me first. So instead of following the sequences created by other yogis I created my own.
