“If You Don’t Have Kids Then What Will You Do In Your Spare Time?”
“Like the harsh criticism of the unemployed adult man who lives in his parent’s basement, society has replaced the childfree as the new deadbeats. Apparently we are doing absolutely nothing with our lives unless we contribute to the world’s population.”
Years ago my cousin asked me this question when he came by my apartment to visit. He was a father of two children and had a demanding career in the medical field.
I told him that while I thoroughly enjoyed my free time, there is so much I could do. Traveling is one option. Honing in on my dancing is another. Teaching myself new things counts as a great utilization of time as well.
He stroked his beard as he contemplated my answer. Then he spoke. “Wow, Sanni. I never thought of that.”
Of course he hadn’t. Many parents say and believe extremely silly things about those who choose not to procreate. One of the many myths about the elusive childfree individual is that we have zero responsibilities and tons of time to be bored.
“Idle hands are the devil’s workshop,” mom and dad used to say while I was growing up. I want to believe that those people who believe everyone should have kids have adapted this quote as gospel.
