We are still searching for all sorts of excuses to hold ladylike and unladylike women accountable for the criminal actions belonging to criminals. All of these innovations and moves we are making as a society, and we still cannot comprehend that rapists should be held accountable for rape. Molesters should be held accountable for molestation. Murderers should be held accountable for murder. Stalkers should be held accountable for stalking. You get the gist. Being unladylike does not fit into the equation whatsoever.

As a collective global population we only blame criminals for criminal activity when the victim is a child. We don’t ask what the child is wearing, or what the child said or did to entice the criminal to harm him or her. But these are the questions women are grilled on whenever the same harm afflicts them, partly because being ladylike is a double-edged sword, and the only person getting cut up badly is the woman.

Being ladylike is supposed to protect us from danger, but being ladylike also means we are supposed to graciously allow and excuse any danger being inflicted on us by the men in our lives because men don’t like hearing no…
