Journal Entry #2: I Am Not A Slave To My Audience For This One Reason
“I played the professional servant while working a 9–5 and I have since retired from that role.”
After waking up from a beautiful and restful nap, I was reminded that I wouldn’t be able to fully exercise my freedom through writing if I was still working a 9–5. On the very last day that the entire staff at my company was laid off in 2020, I was actually supposed to have a meeting with HR about a Facebook post of mine that was supposedly inappropriate.
“That’s not a very nice thing to say about your coworkers. We need to have a meeting with your manager about what is acceptable to post on your social media,” the HR manager wrote to me.
Here’s the thing.
I am a grown ass woman. Besides the guidelines set forth by Mark Zuckerberg, I don’t want anyone telling me what to post on my personal, private account. While I did prepare what I was going to say at that meeting, a part of me just didn’t care about the outcome. It’s something about a job which doesn’t pay me enough to control my life that doesn’t sit right with me.
The freedom to publish what I want, whenever I want, is the sole reason why I literally cannot worry about my audience. The topics I come up with are unpredictable at best, because I have a lot to say about a wide…
