“Because she couldn’t cultivate friendships outside of her husband’s boundaries, I believe her wish for all of us to marry, have children, and be miserable with her was the only way she felt she could connect with us.”

My first job when I moved to New York City was at a law firm. I was tasked with speaking to multiple people per day and seeing if they qualify for cases that can move forward in court.

I belonged to a small department, and my coworkers were fun to be around. For starters, most of us were unmarried and without children. I mainly worked with men, and we would joke around and share stories about our lives in our free time. Our room had a perfect view of the Empire State Building, and I looked forward to guessing which color the building would display each evening. I was paid pretty well and life seemed to be going just fine for me.

We had a casual office environment, which meant we were permitted to wear jeans, sneakers, and t-shirts to work. There were times when I would dress up in skirts and heels, and sometimes I would keep it cool in jeans and flats. I never really thought much about why I chose what I wore to work each day outside of what felt right to me. Some days I felt like dressing traditionally feminine, and other days I didn’t.
