When I worked at a fashion retail chain while I was in college I instantly clicked with Melody, my outspoken, hilarious coworker who joined our team a few months after I started as an hourly employee.

Melody was a single mother, and while we had a lot in common and passed the time by cracking jokes about damn near everything our lives couldn’t have been any more different. It doesn’t take a genius to comprehend how difficult it is for a parent to feed, house, clothe, and support a child as well as themselves on a part-time sales associate’s paycheck. In fact, on the very first day on the job Melody asked me if I could spot her some money for lunch.

In addition to the financial sacrifice there were also many time sacrifices I didn’t have to make. After work I would hop on the train and decompress as I made my way home while Melody had an extra stop to make on the other side of town before she retreated to her apartment. She had to pick up her daughter from daycare, many times at very late hours since we were sometimes let out of work way…
