“Seriously, from the few decades I have graced this planet I have yet to meet one black woman who is happy with herself just the way she is.”

Today I couldn’t get the hit song My Humps by The Black Eyed Peas out of my head, so I decided to watch the accompanying music video that came out many moon ago. I couldn’t help but carefully examine Fergie’s body as she swayed her hips and danced on my MacBook screen as she sang, “My humps, my lovely little lumps” over and over again.

The only thought that came to my mind was this:

Humps and lumps…where?!

Don’t get me wrong: Fergie has an amazing body and her strong, toned legs are to die for. I actually admire a mean set of legs more than a big behind on a woman, so I am not attempting to body shame the entertainer in any way. But as a black woman I was pretty impressed by how unapologetic this woman was when it came celebrating her body plus making tons of money off of this celebration as well; all while many black women continue to degrade themselves because their butt isn’t as big as they would prefer. Even though their butt is bigger than most of the women claiming to have humps and lumps!
