On Being Childfree: The Sickening Energy Behind, “You Never Know!”

I must have some serious psychological issues if I do not want to follow in the footsteps of my mother, as if, “But you were a child once!” means anything. So what if I was a child before? You were too!

I was in the car with my brother and the topic of kids came up.

“You know me. I’m never having kids!” I exclaimed proudly.

“Well, I wouldn’t be so sure. I mean, you never know!” he responded with a shrug and a laugh.

His last sentence caused something to snap within me.

He should’ve known better than to say that. That phrase. The phrase of all phrases that ticks me off. The phrase that no woman who ever wants children will ever have to hear in her entire life.

“What the fuck do you mean you never know?! Chris, I am never, ever having kids!”

“But you know…” his voice trailed off as he stammered. He knew what he walked into. His sister was riled up!

“Listen, if I ever get pregnant I am aborting that baby and sending it right back up to Jesus!”

He burst out laughing as I continued.

“Any of the gods can have that child! I don’t want it!” I sat back in my seat and crossed my arms, satisfied that my brother…
