Privilege: The Forbidden, Morally-Unacceptable Shortcut
Just like we use prayer, the spirits, affirmations, our ancestors, spell work, and other magic tools to create shortcuts, why not use your privilege? Because it’s morally wrong to do so?
As a black woman I am expected to put on a shero cape and grab a picket sign to fight on both fronts. According to society I should be angry 24/7. I should be trying to smash the patriarchy. I should be this. I should be doing that.
However, I am not a rent-a-hero for the world and its problems. You aren’t either. Not only that, but too many women believe they should hear a, “How high?” from me and other ladies because it is expected of us to jump at every single “ism” thrown our way. And we call this nonsense sisterhood. I want no parts of it!
The truth is that privilege is a damn shortcut, whether we want to accept this or not. Just like we use prayer, the spirits, affirmations, our ancestors, spell work, and other magic tools to create shortcuts, why not use your privilege? Because it’s morally wrong to do so?
If you’re pretty, use your genetics and good looks to your advantage. Come from old money? Use your access and resources to your advantage. Why shame yourself for the shortcuts you were handed? They were included in your spiritual life contract; be grateful that you don’t have to…
