The business of loving yourself is a lucrative one. In my opinion, Facebook and Instagram used to be social media platforms. Now they have transformed into aggravating online catalogues by way of sponsored posts. Businesses are advertising clothing, shoes, handbags, and more with claims that purchasing their products are a form of self-care. What a tongue-in-cheek claim! But it works because people eat that shit up. According to the algorithm I should be whipping out my credit card to indulge in these items that claim to be the ultimate solve for my self-imposed issues. But I take different approach. I aggressively hide these ads until the task proves to be too overwhelming; then I give up and click out of the app altogether. I am on social media to connect with friends and showcase my love of writing and dancing, not purchase a new outfit!

The terms self-love and self-care have turned into buzz words to be monetized. Glamour porn is all over the internet disguised as self-care.

It is anything but.

It makes no sense how photos of the latest Chanel unboxing, reels displaying carb-heavy brunches in Paris, five-star hotel tours, and outfit-of-the-day tik toks are really supposed to be any form of taking care of your mind and spirit. Indulgences…
