I always felt inferior to other women because it seemed as though everyone was enjoying their womanhood except for me. They felt safe enough to wear makeup, dress attractively, feel beautiful, and speak to men and even have sex with them.

On the flip side, I didn’t feel like a woman. I didn’t like my body that had been groped, felt up, and thrusted into by so many men. I wanted a new body that was pristine, clean, and pure like my religion taught me was the only vessel worth loving. In my mind there was no way I could ever love a body that’s been through so much trauma.

Nearly all of us have been affected by sexual abuse or harassment at some point in our lives. And if we reached out to others for help, the blanket response from both men and women is that we willingly invited these experiences into our lives through some form of femininity, whether through our beauty and looks, our personal style and clothing choices, or by our sensuality and body language.
