The Popular “Communicate Like An Adult” Meme Is Masculine Worship At Best

Everyone is not as aggressive about getting their needs met, and I wish we would learn to value both masculine and feminine forms of communication.

Why is being blunt correlated with being an adult when all of us were created to communicate in nonverbal ways? Why must we always open our mouths to prove that we are grown just to pacify the extroverts and the, “I just tell it like it is” folks in our lives? When it comes to social interaction, why are we always encouraged to cater to the chatter boxes we know and love, but they are not required to return the favor?

I understand that blunt people exist amongst us and they are very comfortable speaking their minds at any given time. However, everyone is not like that. Everyone is not as aggressive about getting their needs met, and I wish we would learn to value both masculine and feminine forms of communication.

This isn’t to say that a woman is masculine if she is more direct, nor is a man feminine if he is more passive. It’s just both polarities exist when it comes to communication and personal expression, and I think it is about time we quit associating masculine forms of expression as being a mature adult while its opposite is demonized, all because both men and women don’t care to take the time to embrace their…
