Trust Me: Men Hate That You’re Single More Than You Do

“Being a woman of mystery is power in and of itself. Especially when you learn to own the chaos you create.”

-Sanni Lark

I didn’t realize how powerful being a single, childfree woman was until I reminisced on one experience I had with a former therapist. He was a man that I respected and admired. And I was 20 years old when I told him I never wanted to marry or have children.

Looking back, I would think that any decent therapist would attempt to explore why I came to this conclusion, or even just accept that some women simply don’t care to be mothers and wives.

But you see, he was a man first. And a therapist second.

What he did was try to manipulate me into changing my mind about marriage and children. He knew how much I trusted him. I valued the time we spent together, and his conclusions resulting from me sharing my life experiences with him. What he thought about me mattered in my young mind. At the time I was seeing him I was impressionable and vulnerable as hell. And he violated that trust by getting me to change my trajectory.

Whether or not his intentions were pure is not the point. Of course he thought I should be a wife and mother! Most men hold this belief of women. But he knew I didn’t want that for myself. And he still tried to get inside my head to align my will with his desires for my future.
