Unpopular Opinion: True Friends Are Not Servants Or “Yes Men”

I came across a post on Instagram that made me raise an eyebrow. The post reads as follows:
Three easy ways to find out who your true friends are:
- Ask for a ride to the airport
- Ask for help moving
- Have kids
I love playing devil’s advocate because there are always two sides to everything, no matter if the majority agrees with one side because it’s more convenient and beneficial for them. However, I plead not guilty to being a contrarian. I just strongly believe in self-preservation, and most people really have a warped view of what constitutes a healthy friendship or relationship.
Truthfully, I don’t really care for friends because I know that most people treat their friends as accessories and help mates in their busy lives. Ask me how I know. I have spent way too much time trying to be a good friend, only to realize that holding this title means you lose, almost every time. Being a “good friend” is an exhausting role and what you do for others is never good enough. I stopped caring about being a good friend a long time ago.
