Our “Don’t do that!” and “Stop!” pleas sound like the prettiest sheet music to our abuser’s ears.

I know it is popular to dictate that people who are passive aggressive and struggle to speak their minds are not being adults. But I believe some compassion and patience is in order. We don’t know what these people have gone through, either in the past or the present, for them to be so afraid of the repercussions that may or may not result from being blunt. As a woman who struggles to exercise her right to express herself sometimes, I can link past sexual assault and abuse as a reason why I and others may prefer to keep silent.

We know what it’s like to enforce boundaries, knowing good and well that they will not be honored or respected. Our “Don’t do that!” and “Stop!” pleas sound like the prettiest sheet music to our abuser’s ears.

Our pain that they initiated gives them a rush that cannot even be rehabilitated in a jail cell. This is why many violent abusers are repeat offenders and end up making a u-turn right back into those cinderblock cells after doing their bid.
