What Are “Wine Moms” Actually Telling Us About Motherhood?
I look at the term “wine mom” as a cute, acceptable, innocent name to disguise what can potentially be alcohol abuse.
“Motherhood: Powered by love. Fueled by coffee. Sustained by wine.”
Dry January is an event that either strikes fear in the hearts of the bravest individuals, or it is a normal occurrence for those who are not hooked on the booze.
For those who are not in the know, Dry January is a one-month sabbatical where willing participants abstain from alcohol for 31 days. Maybe it’s just me, but the fact that Dry January exists is an alert that perhaps we drink too much as a society?
Not only have we made the flirtation of alcoholism a sophistication of indulgence and enjoying life, in many cultures around the world downing copious amounts of poisonous liquid is a normalcy, as is our obsession with coffee. I used to observe in silence as my coworkers drowned their bodies in the roasted beans, along with sugary flavored creamer and even more white sugar as a ritual every morning and afternoon. Then they would complain about their headaches, drowsiness, insomnia, and expanding waistlines while they made themselves yet another cup, not realizing that a fucking cup or two of water is a good start to help their ailments.
