Why Are Children Not Looked At As A Luxury That Everyone Cannot Afford?

“In some countries around the world parents are so desperate to make ends meet they are literally prostituting their young children to older male vacationers in exchange for money to buy food.

Is our society promoting this level of desperation when we tell women to breed as much as they physically can, all while digging themselves and their children deeper into inescapable poverty and extreme hunger with each baby that is born?”

In a childfree group I belong to I came across the following post:

My friend’s daughter’s 4th birthday is this Thursday. Looking for anything to pass along to her. My friend is a single mother of two kids, soon to be three, and is struggling to make ends meet like most people. But her daughter will be 4 on Thursday and she does not even have a cake for her daughter, or the means to buy cake mix from the dollar store. Just wondering if anyone has any toys or anything they can donate for her.

I’ve been thinking about this for a very long time: the notion that everyone cannot afford what they truly want.

Everyone cannot afford to drive a foreign car.

Everyone cannot afford to attend an Ivy League school.
