Why I Don’t Care To Always “Clap Back” Or Put People In Their Place, In Person Or Online

“If someone has a problem with me, for whatever reason, it shall remain their problem until kingdom come. I am not in the business of making other people’s problems my own. My life is peaceful because I simply don’t care.”

As a black woman, I definitely feel like an anomaly when it comes to how I respond to confrontation. I sit back and objectively observe the excitement viewers get when it comes to viral drama on social media, or whenever they see their favorite celebrities “check” their cast mates, their boyfriends, the waiter bringing them their margaritas, anyone. Just look at the success of shows such as Love & Hip Hop or The Real Housewives. These shows produce multiple seasons and rake in millions of dollars because their audience is oh-so-hungry for the drama that unfolds with each episode. By the way, I don’t watch these kinds of drama-filled programming. I don’t care to see two women fight over an unemployed man who is cheating on both of them every single season. Maybe it’s just me but that shit gets boring after a few episodes.

Don’t get me wrong. I believe that putting people in their place is an absolute necessity at times. But it is not my default response to get emotionally riled up over every damn thing. I don’t believe that the majority of situations…
