Why I Don’t “Match Energy,” And Why You Shouldn’t Be Embarrassed If You Don’t Either!

If someone makes you feel bad it is because you value them and their opinions. And the truth is that I don’t value that many people.

I usually am very calculated in my responses to people, no matter if they are trying to argue with me, embarrass me and make me feel bad, or even if they genuinely want to engage in discussion and understand my point of view. I have learned how to control my emotions, and in turn, control other people through their emotions.

Simply put, you cannot control anything in anyone you don’t have control over in yourself. I cannot imagine being so emotional over anything someone says or does because that would signify that I value them enough to give them unfettered access to my emotions.

I look at it this way: if someone makes you feel bad it is because you value them and their opinions. And the truth is that I don’t value that many people.

For years I have rolled my eyes at the many posts and reels from people, mainly black folks, who are so adamant about letting the world know that they match energy, or they return the same energy they are given. It leads me to ask why? Why is everyone allowed to bother you so freely? Who are they to you? Matching energy implies that you are their equal. Personally…
