Why Women Hate Self-Care

I am spending the Christmas holiday with my family, and tonight my mother complained about her shoulder that she sprained from overexerting herself.

I couldn’t help but stare at her arm being propped up with a makeshift cast created with one of her scarves and wonder when she was going to realize that doing the absolute most for others will break your body down in debilitating ways! In my opinion there is nothing honorable about being this invested into others that your body cannot adjust to those demands.

Mum has been running herself ragged over the past few days through cooking, cleaning, and decorating for guests she invited over for the holidays. While we have all pitched in to ease the work load she placed on herself, the perfectionist in her still insisted on doing nearly everything her way by herself. And she paid for it dearly.

“I can barely move my arm or take off my clothes!” she complained this evening.

A twinge of anger arose inside of me, as I knew my stubborn mother would never recognize that her strong desire to singlehandedly make everyone’s holiday a happy one was destroying her physically. Her hurt arm was her body’s attempt to communicate with her and force her to sit down and relax for a change. My…
